A breath
Is the fire
That burns against the cold
A salve
Is the rain
That comes amidst the drought
Salvation
Is the green
That sprouts from winter’s melt
If only I can nurture it
A breath
Is the fire
That burns against the cold
A salve
Is the rain
That comes amidst the drought
Salvation
Is the green
That sprouts from winter’s melt
If only I can nurture it
You shift closer yet
Your skin touches mine; my heart
Quickens, unbidden
A bright-colored lie
Is the sun on winter’s day
Quick blows winter’s wind
Taking the colors with it
Leaving the stillness
With the sun so high
I could hardly see
The shadow walking
Under me
And in the light
The dark did hide
Though it was always
There beside
I wondered what
Became of it
When nighttime came
The bright sun set
But when came the morn
The shadow sprung
From night’s embrace
There by me hung
It was a comfort,
To tell truly
To know it never
Left me
I peered into the Reaper’s eyes
And saw amidst the grey
The truth against a world of lies:
That with him solace lay
Give me pen and pad
Let me make with them a world
Like none before seen
I have often wandered
And often wondered
Whether I have wandered enough
Seen enough
Heard enough
Been enough
Yet in my heart of hearts
I sense
I know
I wander
Not for an answer
But because the question
Is worth the wandering
There is a shadow
Buried in my corners
Hidden in my nooks
Hidden from me
As I’ve hidden from it
Never stopping to wonder
Does it feel?
Does it fear?
Does it wish for my embrace?
Is it me?
The iron world comes crashing in
Upon my weary mind
A hot, discordant, noisome din
By old men unconfined
Let loose upon a quiet world
The symphony destroys
With fists of coal and steel unfurled
It makes of us its toys
And thus I wish for simpler things
A garden bright and green
Ere greed broke all the world’s workings
And made it cold and mean
