Dawn breaks
And the birds awaken
And the boughs creak
‘Neath the wind
Dawn breaks
And the birds awaken
And the boughs creak
‘Neath the wind
Shadows follow me
Even past crooked corners
Ever just behind
The horse hooves beating trouble me
As they come down the lane
Of mental pathways I can’t see
Amidst the foggy plain
I wonder what those drums portend
And when they’ll reach my sight
If they foretell my story’s end
Or tell of guiding light
As the last frost melts
I will harvest what grew
From the seeds
Deep in my soul
Embraced in the cold
Guided through the storms
And if the stars will it
Emerge unbitten by that frost
A wiser thing
Than I was before
Let’s hang some branches
And dance beneath the starlight
Like dawn will ne’er come
Why must my tired heart suffer so
For what it can’t control?
Let us start a fire
And burn away winter’s chill
Burn till spring arrives
The grey winter
Tightens its unseen grip
Silently
Wordlessly
Enveloping all around
Until such a time
As the emergence of the sun
Would go unrecognized
In turgid waters does the ship
Of my life make its way
E’er does the brine wash o’er and tip
My hull, to my dismay
No solid ground avails me
Nor wind blow straight and true
Instead it’s my ship sails me
No matter what I do
Some days I can rest
Others my mind is weary
Yet can only whirl
