A wolf resides within my heart
E’er threatening to leap and bite
To fight and tear my world apart
If I were to give in one night

A fiery heat within my breast
Calls out to all the living earth
Cries not to dwell amongst the rest
But in a place of trees and birds and mirth
8/5/2023 – so haggard
So haggard do I oft return
To home’s warm comforts and solace

The summer sun upon the grass
Is bright and dances in the wind
With none of winter’s cold morass
Its joy still fresh, its truth undimmed

A dam is but a trifling thing
Against the power of the earth
A highway but a dust footprint
Upon the world’s immensity
A building, imitation of
The age-old stone beneath your feet
A nation little more than thought
When earth is elder e’en than we
