In five short years so much you’ve taught
Of how creatures can love
What I can be and how I ought
To, fearless, leap above
The stinging nettles of the earth
Though many they may be
I can but run with boundless mirth
The way you showed to me
In five short years so much you’ve taught
Of how creatures can love
What I can be and how I ought
To, fearless, leap above
The stinging nettles of the earth
Though many they may be
I can but run with boundless mirth
The way you showed to me
Let’s sink beneath the azure waves
And by the turtles swim
There where a quiet music plays
That I might hide within
I have but one heart for to give
One soul to join a pair
One body that by yours can live
For you they all lay bare
It was amidst the broken snow
Beneath the new spring sun
As brown and green began to grow
And melt began to run
There did I find the seed we’d sown
So careful in the soil
Gone bright and lively, not undone
By winter’s frozen toil
A shadowed path, soft green with moss
Lies there before my feet
Red trees and yellow their leaves toss
And life and death there meet
To walk upon it is to know
The truth the sages say:
‘Twixt light and shadow you must go
To throw your cares away
Though I have often fallen from
The mores that I pursue
I still seek high, and often some
Great truth comes into view
It is with great surrender that
This wisdom I receive
And oft I must remember that
‘Twill e’er be a reprieve
With sudden fire my heart alights
And fills with ancient song
To hold so close to storied sights
It runs and leaps along
When shadowed musings enter me
Unbid, with ill intent
I pause and wonder what they see
In me that can be bent
And to those parts I turn my gaze
And build upon their bricks
So that the sickly shadow-rays
Can never fit betwixt
The horse hooves beating trouble me
As they come down the lane
Of mental pathways I can’t see
Amidst the foggy plain
I wonder what those drums portend
And when they’ll reach my sight
If they foretell my story’s end
Or tell of guiding light
Why must my tired heart suffer so
For what it can’t control?
