The sky darkens
The earth cools
And all the world slows
But here
Hearths roar
Hearts quicken
Both with flames alight
Their warmth unbound
The sky darkens
The earth cools
And all the world slows
But here
Hearths roar
Hearts quicken
Both with flames alight
Their warmth unbound
Whither went the golden harp
That played the sweetest tune?
Where have all the trumpets gone
With their triumphant call?
Why, when the music rang so clear,
Has it now ceased, so soon?
And when again will their song play
In my mind’s busy hall?
A symphony plays
And my breath can, at last, slow
As a peace descends
Outside a fierce wind blows
And whistles through the trees
And cool descends upon the earth
With otherworldly ease
But here I sit in quiet
With warmth not far from me
For in your arms there’s peace untold
And from the chill I’m free
Staff, raft, wall, or meal
Endless its purposes seem
Like its skyward reach
The sky breathes warm wind
O’er the cold, colorless ground
Life rises once more
A spark alights
In my mind’s eye
Of places unreal, uncreated
And that spark
Flickers into flame
As the skies and earth take shape
Ah, and those within
That world
I know their hearts
Surer than I know my own
The evening’s gone so quiet now
There’s no sound in the world
And so my mind’s consumed with how
Your hand in mine is curled
Your eyes are shut, and so your hand
Is still and calm and soft
All troubles of the day are banned
From you; your heart’s aloft
A whisper deadens
Fades before it can be heard
Over the fresh snow
I dream of a place
Free of greed’s viselike grasp
Where the rivers run wide, wild, and true
Where joy flies apace
Toward he who but asks
And more than all, all there is you
