7/3/2023 – wish

On July 3, 2023June 30, 2023 By adamcallahan117In Free Verse, Short Poems1 Comment

I have but one desire
One bright, commanding need
One wish that would fulfill my ev’ry dream
It burns hot as a fire
It plants in me a seed

I wish to know what wish that wish might be

7/1/2023 – halfway

On July 1, 2023June 30, 2023 By adamcallahan117In Free Verse, Short PoemsLeave a comment

Halfway is troubling
Halfway is challenging
Halfway is where my failures go to wait

Halfway is mocking
Halfway is scolding
Halfway is when the urgency sets in

Halfway is one point
Halfway is one stop
Halfway is just a place upon a line

Halfway is quiet
Halfway is nothing
Halfway is just halfway, just halfway

6/30/2023 – elder

On June 30, 2023 By adamcallahan117In Free Verse, Short PoemsLeave a comment

A dam is but a trifling thing
Against the power of the earth
A highway but a dust footprint
Upon the world’s immensity
A building, imitation of
The age-old stone beneath your feet
A nation little more than thought
When earth is elder e’en than we

When the storm clouds break
And light hits the rain-soaked ground
All the world’s alive

6/28/2023 – summer

On June 28, 2023June 21, 2023 By adamcallahan117In Free Verse, Short PoemsLeave a comment

The wind is still, the air heavy
The grasses tall and dry
The sounds around a crazed bevy
Of songs all lifting high

6/27/2023 – so bright

On June 27, 2023June 21, 2023 By adamcallahan117In Free Verse, Short PoemsLeave a comment

So bright the sun in desert lands
Where heat and light are death
So bright the sun upon the sea
Where broken clouds are life

I am made of dust
Dust of stars, dust of ashes
Old and new at once

6/24/2023 – man eats

On June 24, 2023June 21, 2023 By adamcallahan117In Free Verse, Short Poems1 Comment

Man eats the fruit
That he might grow hale

Man eats the prey
That he might grow strong

Man eats the land
That he might grow rich

Man eats the enemy
That he might grow mighty

Man eats the sea
That he might grow vast

Man eats the world
That he might grow godlike

Man eats
Man eats
Man eats

Till nothing remains

6/23/2023 – a haiku

Make of me a tree
That I might grow tall and strong
After I am gone

Unbidden feelings often come
In times of quiet solitude
