A shadow lurks in wait
On every shattered shore
Where avarice and hate
Have left no room for more
We trample and we steal
From earth and from ourselves
Seeking that golden meal
More trinkets for our shelves
But when it all is stripped away
And when the earth is dry and spent
We’ll find our gold is dun and grey
That we have killed the very firmament
The waves rise and break
While the sands roil within them
Perfect harmony
A trodden land is silent
A forgotten land hums
An untouched land sings
I have not seen more than a speck
Of all the wide world’s scenery
And so I long to go and trek
‘Cross all the land and every sea
I have not a thought
For mankind’s edifices:
All but grains of sand
Let all the music on the wind
Sing bright and loud to every shore
I swing and heft my worldly tools
That they might make of all around
A place more like what came before
When they were but a dream, I but a man
Waves lap at the shore
Whispering of adventure
A wide world beyond
I watch and wait for anything to pass
Some moment that would make it clear to me:
This is the truth that I can trust to last
This is the path I’ll walk eternally
A wolf resides within my heart
E’er threatening to leap and bite
To fight and tear my world apart
If I were to give in one night
