8/10/2021 – when the bell is ringing

On August 10, 2021August 9, 2021 By adamcallahan117In Free Verse, Short PoemsLeave a comment

If, when the bell is ringing,
I feel there’s more to do,
But I am stuck hand-wringing
Running in circles, too

What then will come upon me,
If I am frozen still
And weariness has won me
To so deflate my will?

home

Though it is messy
Though it carries stresses
Though it is both too large
And too small
Though it’ll never be perfect
Though there will be laughter and tears
Though someday you’ll leave it

Today it is home.

Come, let us sail away
Go far, to distant shores
We’ll raise sail with the day
With sun or if it pours

And somewhere may we find
A quiet place to be
With peace of heart and mind
Just us there, you and me

So much yet to do
And little time to do it
Therein lies the rub

Why does the gull cry?
Why does it make the choice?
Why sail across the open sky
And raise so high its voice?

8/4/2021 – when you took my heart

When you took my heart
I knew within my soul
This was cosmic art
And I would be whole.

I see no honor
In building mountainous wealth;
When Earth is so rich

Such life there is for the taking
If one can but rise

To be asked such a thing

I once walked across
A broken tree
Whose boughs sagged low
Whose leaves wilted
Weak in the breeze

I asked the tree what it needed
And though it did not answer
Its leaves grew greener
Its boughs rose, if only a little
To be asked such a thing

7/30/2021 – alas that time is fleeting

On July 30, 2021July 23, 2021 By adamcallahan117In Free Verse, Short PoemsLeave a comment

Alas that time is fleeting
That moments pass us by
That each and every meeting
Is gone soon as it’s nigh
