I have walked far
And though the shoes upon my feet
Have worn
Have changed
And though the skin upon my soles
Has calloused
Broken
Healed
And though the ground beneath me
Is everywhere different
Soft, hard
Cool, hot
Barren, verdant
The earth remains
And ever will
At last the wayward sun has shown its face
And lit the grey, dead ground with beams of life
Would that it never went away again
And stayed instead never far from my gaze
Such joy you bring
With bark, sniff, and snuggle
And I only wish
You could stay forever
But we have such time yet
With many forevers in between
Oft the earth trembles beneath my feet
Not great and loud and rumbling
But quiet
As a bird at dawn
And I can hear its words
Its pain
Its want
As it speaks with a voice
Of billions
Lived and gone
Who now dwell within it
What power has the morning over me?
A great deal, it turns out.
After a long-expected time of rest
I find my troubles still lying in wait
And thus I think it’s time that they confessed
Their hungers, relaxation will not sate
How far must I go
How many horizons seek
How much chaos endure
Before the threads interweave
The tapestry forms
The harmonies of this stream
Sing
Would but that I could
Change the stream
Bend its flow
Point it elsewhere
Alas that the stream ever carries me
And its mouth remains
Unmoved
Allow me this: to breathe this once
And for a time be still
To be not like unquiet ones
Whose lives are lust and will
There is a silence hiding in the roar
A peace to find amidst the world’s chaos
A knowing that uncertainty e’er reigns
And order’s but a stone that will be dust
